Slim Jim Factory Explosion
Raleigh, Garner, Durham, Lumberton, Rocky Mount, Fayetteville, and Tarboro, North Carolina
Warehouse / Factory Injuries
An accident at the ConAgra Foods factory in Garner, North Carolina injured dozens of employees on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 when an explosion (possibly due to an ammonia gas leak)) caused parts of the plant’s roof to cave in. There were approximately 300 employees in the Slim Jim plant when the explosion occurred at 11:30 a.m.
Employees were rushed out of the plant located on Jones Sausage Road, but many suffered exposure to the toxic fumes; other employees suffered chemical burns. Some of the victims suffered burns to over 50% of their bodies. Of the several employees injured, a number were injured critically. A total of 32 people were taken to area hospitals including the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Unit at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A number of workers were exposed to dangerous ammonia gas. Click for information from the Centers for Disease Control regarding ammonia gas exposure. Click here for OSHA information on ammonia refrigeration.

What makes the explosion at ConAgra even more upsetting is that the 50,000 square foot plant had previous safety violations dating back to 2006 and 2007 and even earlier. In 2001, a staggering 34 violations were recorded, and the plant had to pay OSHA a fine of over $12,000.
